Joseph Lawrence Sax (February 3, 1936 – March 9, 2014) was an environmental law professor, known for developing the public trust doctrine.〔Douglas Martin, ("Joseph Sax, Who Pioneered Environmental Law, Dies at 78" ) (obituary), ''New York Times'', March 10, 2014.〕 Born and raised in Chicago, Sax graduated from Harvard University in 1957 and then earned a law degree in 1959〔 from the University of Chicago Law School.〔 After a few years in private practice and at the Department of Justice he began teaching, first with the University of Colorado in 1962 and then at the University of Michigan in 1965.〔 He joined the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1986.〔(Joseph L.
